The
columbiad, was a large caliber, smoothbore, muzzle loading cannon used in the Renaissance (around the sixteenth century), able to shoot projectles as big as walnuts. The name came from the Provençal
colobrina, and from Latin
coluber (snake). The gun barrel was stuck on a stick which rested on the ground and the weapon was used as a crossbow... That's the name of this bike.
Giancarlo Lolo, the owner
, was fascinated by the
Bimota Sebulba Special, award winner in Rome at the 2012 Motodays’ cafe racer contest. Based on his 2000
XJR1300, he asked our friend
Simone Lecca of
Metalbike Garage a cafe racer with only three requirements: 1) Manx tank, 2) full aluminium body and 3) a dual seat tail... Check out story of this build and the other bike pics in the rest of this article!
La colubrina, talvolta chiamata cannone a mano, era un’arma da fuoco di grosso calibro utilizzata nel rinascimento (intorno al XVI secolo). Il nome deriva dal provenzale
colobrina, e dal latino
coluber (serpente) e, in inglese il suo nome è
Columbiad, come il nome del cannone di
Giulio Verne! La canna era incastrata su una bastone che poggiava in terra e l'arma era usata come una balestra, sparando proiettili grandi quanto delle noci... Ed ecco il nome di questa moto.
Giancarlo Lolo, il proprietario,
era rimasto affascinato dalla
Sebulba Bimota che aveva vinto il concorso cafe racer ai
Motodays di Roma nel 2012. Basata sulla sua
XJR1200 del 2000, ha chiesto al nostro amico
Simone Lecca di
Metalbike Garage una cafe racer con tre soli requisiti: serbatoio Manx, carrozzeria in lega d’alluminio e coda biposto… “

Simone says: "I started the project ordering 20/10 aluminium sheets to the best provider of special alloys of northern Italy. As soon as I got them, I began to work on the tank. I believe it's the most important part of the bike. As I say the tank is the chest, then the hips, and finally the tail with the tuck and roll saddle. The subframe was cut just behind the shocks and another U-shaped custom made subframe was plugged in the main structure. Finally, a tight front fender with separate billet custom brackets... It would have been nice enaugh at that stage, but I went into the details and I added: the custom made triple plates, the billet front fork, the ventilated billet custom tank cap with special lock, the clip on’s, the billet brake fluid tank, the Rizoma grips and rear mirrors, the Mivv X-cone plus muffler, the red powder coated valve covers”. And what about the engine? Giancarlo had already thought at this: lightened and balanced crankshaft, engine capacity bored from 1250 to 1300 cc, forged pistons, polished air ducts, stage 3 Dynojet kit, conical filters, 4 in 1 stainless exhaust pipes. The power? 124.5 hp at the counter. Not too bad!

Incominciai con l'ordinare lastre d’alluminio dello spessore di 20/10 dal migliore fornitore di leghe speciali del nord Italia. Appena arrivate, ho iniziato a lavorare sul serbatoio che doveva essere la parte più importante della moto. Come dico in gergo era il torace, poi i fianchi e coda con sella tuck and roll. Il telaio sottocoda è stato sezionato all’altezza degli ammortizzatori e ne è stato impiantato un altro ad U con spine interne di struttura. Per ultimo, un parafango anteriore radente con supporti separati fissati con viti in ergal… Sarebbe stata già bella così, ma mancavano delle minuzie, tipo la piastra anteriore, delle forche in lega d’alluminio ricavata dal pieno, il tappo del serbatoio con chiusura a chiave e areazione per vapori, sempre ricavato dal pieno, i semimanubri, il serbatoio olio freno, le manopole e gli specchi Rizoma, lo scarico finale Mivv X-cone plus, i coperchi punterie e carburatori ceramicizzati rosso fuoco”. E la meccanica? A questo Giancarlo aveva già pensato: albero motore alleggerito ed equilibrato, cilindrata portata da 1250cc a 1300cc effettivi, pistoni forgiati, condotti di aspirazione e scarico lucidati, carburatori con kit dinojet stage 3, filtri conici, collettore di scarico 4 in 1 in acciaio. La potenza? 124.5 cv al banco. Non male!
