Readers' rides: "La Prima" by Umberto

"It all started as a joke. I wanted a winter hobby for me and my uncle. We are both motorcycle enthusiasts. I have got a Multistrada 1200S and my uncle has got a Ducati Panigale. Well, what to do during the winter? Buy a 2005 Ducati 749S and turn it into a unique bike. The bike had originally a red frame and gray rims. I just didn’t like it..." Umberto Panarotto

Umberto Panarotto

The donor bike was completely dismantled and the engine completely overhauled. "Since the engine was opened we chose to paint the crankcases embossed black, Harley style. Once the engine was reassembled, we found the result was fantastic. Then we had to paint the tank and the frame in glossy black". The wheels were painted glossy black as well, but the edges were polished.

The new tail and the seat are custom made. The muffler is Virex, from Padua.

The stock gauges were ok, but the vertical layout wasn’t suitable for a naked. So a minimal digital instrument was chosen. Adapting it to the Ducati’s electronics gave our friends a few headaches.

Ain't easy to turn a dressed bike into a pretty naked. And our heroes opted for a vintage round headlight to eliminate the insect look of the original headlights. The new bar-end rear mirrors were chosen vintage style as well.

The Showa front suspension was replaced with the Ohlins forks from a 1198S. The triple clamps were CNC machined and anodized black. Brake discs are Braking while the radial calipers are Brembo. The clip-on’s were slighlty raised to give a more comfortable riding position.

Not a rare beauty, but a real killer bike. Entirely home made. Like it!

"Arth 07" by Totti

This time the great Roberto Totti decided to turn a sport tourer bike like the Ducati Darmah 900 into a supebike. Its owner, Arturo Ansaloni, will make it ride it in some races of the Vintage Italian Championship and in some sport events abroad. The heart, the frame and little else of the original bike has been saved, while several other components have been modified or replaced by others, more valuable, such as the aluminum tank, or more performing. Viewed at the Yesterbike booth at the Motodays in Rome, this weekend the bike got down to the track and wowed his happy owner.

RAD... Perhaps it's not over

On 15 January 2014, after more than 15 years of passion, designing, fabricating, riding and developing his dreams, Jose "Pepo" Rosell, the legendary father of Radical Ducati, announced that RAD was closing his workshop and stopping his activity. Now, a new announcement says that the French company Ducatiamo, managed by Yann Thomas, will continue the Radical Ducati work, building and selling the RAD 02 parts and MANX parts. We all hope to have new models bringing the signature of our genial friend Pepo. Good luck Ducatiamo, we have great expectations.

During the MBE in Verona a couple of weeks ago I was impressed by this bike. I read about it but I didn't know that it is now part of the  Black Douglas private collection in Italy. It's a hybrid HD/Ducati 900SS engine mounted on a Santee rigid frame. The engine consists of Ultima cases, Keith Black pistons, stock stroke and bore, Carillo rods, two rear Ducati 900SS cylinder heads, the one off cylinders specifically made by Axtell. "Not sure what I was thinking when I came up with this idea - says Chris Barber, the builder and designer of this bike - I was living in the States at the time and thought it would be a fun to stick Ducati heads on a Harley bottom end. This project got a lot of comments from nahsayers but I didn't build it to make the Harley engine something it could never be, I built it because I could". Crossbreed Cycles, East Sussex.

Who the fuck is El Solitario?

1993 Ducati 900 SS "Petardo" @ the Verona MBE 2014

The German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886 – 1969), better known as Mies and widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture (along with Le Corbusier, Alvar Aalto, and Frank Lloyd Wright) is the one who said the sentence that all of us, custom motorcycling addicted, know very well: “Less is more”. More recently, another guru of engineering and design, Mr. Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman (1928-1982), founder of Lotus, taught us another very important lesson: "Simplify, then add lightness". Well, Mr. David Borras and his friends at El Solitario MC, in Galicia (Spain), not far from the northern border of Portugal, seem to don't give a damn about these august ancestors’ teachings. Their last builds are weird, unusual, shocking and somehow anarchic. David is certainly the man of the moment on the custom scene. By now, he is widely regarded as a customizing guru, he is present at all the most important custom events all over the world and even the BMW Motorrad, during the launch of its last R90T, involved him in a promo video and consigned him the donor bike to produce his latest “Impostor”.

During the last MBE in Verona I didn’t have the chance to introduce myself to him and talk a little. I saw him during the event but he was always surrounded by fans and customers and I thought to meet him a little during the very last day of the show, assuming a less busy situation. Unfortunately, at the end I didn’t have the chance. The question I would have liked to ask him, who is certainly able to build lighter bikes without useless gauges and metal “drying rack” fairing is how much he is driven by the aim to impress the public and getting a good return in terms of business and how much is instead really inspired by the desire to break the unwritten rules of customising. Rules which, indeed, in the last years of growing interest for special bikes, are becoming a bit boring, with too many builds ever more similar to each other.

Whatever is the answer, which soon or later I’m confident to get directly from this man, it must be recognised that few builders in the past became so popular in such a short time and a reference for so many motorcycling enthusiasts and even motorcycling companies. An additional evidence of what I’m saying is that I’m writing so many words and featuring so many pictures about El Solitario even if I cannot consider myself among those who think that these bikes are masterpieces… Not yet, anyway!
